 $72-78 per hour 
 
SCHEDULE
Monday-Friday. (40 hours per week) 
 
CONTRACT TERM
1 year with high likelihood of extension or conversion to full time employee.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW – Utility Project Engineer- Substation Design
Electrical Project Engineer with a strong background in Transmission and Distribution (T&D) substation engineering. This role focuses on primary (outdoor) physical substation design, supporting both utility and renewable energy projects, including grid interconnections.
The ideal candidate will bring experience working with electric utilities (preferably PG&E) and hands-on expertise developing substation design drawings, layouts, and required engineering studies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead and support substation physical design for high-voltage T&D systems
  • Develop and review:
    • Single line diagrams (SLDs)
    • Substation plan and elevation drawings
    • General arrangement and layout drawings
    • Equipment erection and construction drawings
  • Design and layout:
    • High voltage bus systems
    • Cable routing, conduit, and wiring systems
    • Grounding systems and auxiliary power
    • Control building layouts
  • Ensure designs align with utility requirements and grid interconnection standards
  • Apply and interpret IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards in all designs
  • Support both AIS (Air Insulated Substations) and GIS (Gas Insulated Substations) applications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, project management, and field personnel
  • Review and validate engineering deliverables for accuracy and quality
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight as needed
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
  • Minimum 4+ years of experience in Transmission and Distribution (T&D) substation engineering 
  • Proven experience supporting utility-scale substation projects (PG&E experience strongly preferred) 
  • Hands-on experience with substation physical design and drawing development 
  • Strong knowledge of: 
    • High voltage substation systems (69kV–500kV+) 
    • North American standards: IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC 
    • Utility requirements and grid codes 
  • Experience with both AIS and GIS substations 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE preferred)
  • PE or obtaining PE
